Kennedys “Apoplectic” Over Treatment of Caroline

STOP THE PRESSES! HOLD THE PHONES!

NOW THERE’S A NEW, IMPROVED, EQUALLY MYSTERIOUS “SECRET” REASON CAROLINE DROPPED HER SENATE BID, NY POST SAYS

CAROLINE Kennedy‘s “personal reasons” for withdrawing from Senate consideration were not connected to damaging claims from Gov. Paterson’s camp that she owed back taxes, had a nanny problem or faced a marital scandal, two sources close to her have told The New York Post.

“The reasons she withdrew had nothing to do with the reasons that have been cited by that person close to Gov. Paterson,” said one of the sources.

“And Gov. Paterson knows it,” the source, raising his voice in anger, continued.

The source said that Kennedy, who had been touted as the leading candidate to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton for some two months, would have taken the job if Paterson had moved more swiftly to make a decision, and would have said yes even as late as Monday or late Tuesday – because the family problem had not yet arisen.

A second source close to Caroline Kennedy’s family confirmed that the “personal reasons” cited by Kennedy were not related to the three possibilities that would be leaked by an authoritative Paterson operative.

“Caroline learned on Wednesday that there was a specific and serious concern involving someone in her family, and it had nothing to do with taxes, nannies or her marriage,” said the second source.

MAD AS HELL

“Caroline can’t believe what Paterson did to her. She was smeared, and she’s never going to forgive it or forget it,” the source continued.

While neither source would say so, others close to the Kennedys believe the negative reaction of one of Kennedy’s children was a determining factor in her withdrawing from consideration for the seat, which eventually went to Kirsten Gillibrand.

The new revelations explain why, as The Post reported yesterday, members of the Kennedy family are “apoplectic” over the way the daughter of President John F. Kennedy was treated.

“One of the untold stories here is that Paterson has destroyed the willingness of anyone of any stature to go through the vetting process for a job,” said a state official.

“What this said is that no one who gives anything in confidence to the governor’s office can be assured that the confidence will be honored, and that’s as damning a thing in government as there can be,” the official continued.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS:

It’s awfully interesting to see the NY Post‘s Fred Dicker (the guy who was so eager to publish those nasty rumors about Caroline last week without anything more to back it up than one anonymous source “close to Gov. Paterson”) writes this piece now that the damage to Kennedy’s reputation is already done.

Knowing full well Dicker and his publication could potentially be sued for libel by Caroline and her husband Ed Schlossberg, notice the interesting timing of this sudden “revelation” that Caroline actually dropped out of the race for some other special “secret” reason (still mysterious, though, and Dicker still offers not a shred of proof) than taxes, nannies, an affair, or an uncle dying of brain cancer.

Also notice how careful Dicker is to say this time that he has two sources (although both sources are anonymous) for the story instead of just one. Are we supposed to be convinced? Does he really think this is going to get himself and the Post off the hook legally?

For Caroline’s sake, I just hope her legal team is savvier and hungrier than her team of political advisers were.
